Alphabet books were among the first books made for children, and are still being published in great numbers. They are so popular because they serve the useful function of helping children learn the alphabet's connection to the world of creatures and things, and because they teach this in such an enjoyable manner.
Our alphabet, like our very popular Mother Goose book, draws upon our library of old children's books to create a new book more various than any other ABC. For each letter we show five different illustrations from five different antique ABC's. We think this not only a pleasant way to explore a letter, but it also shows how different minds approach the problem. We used more than one hundred different books for this project, and believe our volume will delight the child who learns from it and stimulate the adults with its variety and historical perspective.
All of the books we draw up on are identified and dated. An illustrated appendix examines different approaches to making an alphabet book
